For any college student, it’s inescapable, unavoidable and inevitable; it’s the wearisome job search.
With graduation inching closer and closer every minute, starting freshman year, students need to start thinking about how to make themselves marketable so they can earn that dream job college is supposed to be preparing them for. Sometimes the job search is not as easy as some can hope for, which is why advice from those who have been through the gruesome job search process is exactly what undergraduates need.
Lambda Pi Eta, the Villanova Communications Honor Society, hosted a Communication Career Day, Saturday, Jan. 30 in Bartley Hall at Villanova University. Alumni in the Communications field were invited to speak to undergrads about the job hunting process and the best advice for successfully making it in “the real world” after graduation.
A panel of 15 alumni with jobs ranging from newscasters to account executives to event planners made it out to the event. 60 communications students were eager to absorb the knowledge that the former Wildcats were willing to share.
The day started off with a panel of five alumni giving the best tips for creating a killer resume. They gave simple advice such as making sure there are no spelling errors and nit picky details such as keeping your resume to one page. The group was even able to critique some student resumes so everyone could learn the best ways to look top notch on paper.
The next panel of alumni spoke about interview tips and the best ways to prepare before the big day. The alumni stressed the importance of “dressing for success” the day of an interview. An interviewee needs to make the best impression in a little amount of time and should always come prepared with the answers to typical interview questions. Always have a speech prepared for when the interviewer asks, “tell me a little about yourself” and make sure to turn any negative flaws that you may have into positive ones.
The final panel of alumni focused on follow up thank you notes and emails. There was a short debate on whether it is better to send and email or a thank you, but sending both was the consensus that the panel decided on.
The students that attended the event left feeling confident and positive about the upcoming job search.
“This day was an awesome way to connect with alumni and hear real life stories about life after Villanova,” shared junior Tracey Nagle.
The Communications Honor Society received a lot of positive feedback on Communication Career Day and they hope to host one every year.
Most colleges have events such as these to help make the job hunting process a bit less stressful. It is important to take advantage of such opportunities so that dream job after graduation can become a reality.
